Report of GLOMAR PhD student Francesca Vallé about her research stay at the Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen, Norway from 17 February – 20 March 2013

I spent one month at the Department of Earth Science in Bergen (Norway) working with Dr. Stijn De Schepper, who is an expert on Pliocene dinoflagellate cysts, palaeoceanography and climate variability. The aims of my stay in Bergen were to gain confidence in identifying dinoflagellate cysts of samples from my second study site from the Early and Late Pliocene, to discuss about the interpretation of the results I already obtained for the first study site, improving my understanding of the significance of oceanic circulation as a driver for Pliocene climate changes. During the first three weeks, I have been intensively counting at the light microscope under the supervision of Dr. De Schepper, solving directly all the arising identification problems and checking out important bibliography. Being there, I could also look at some slides of Dr. De Schepper as reference collection for the most abundant species I find in my samples. During the last week we talked about the dinocysts record from the first study site and I got many inputs and suggestions for its interpretation. Dr. De Schepper suggested me also how to elaborate the new dataset which I started to produce in Bergen and I will complete in Bremen. I will continue to work with Dr. De Schepper during the writing process of my manuscript. Besides the scientific benefits I got from my research stay, I really liked to live in Bergen which is a quite expensive but very nice city, surrounded by hills and fjords.

I thank GLOMAR for funding my stay in Bergen which has been fruitful for me and for my research work.
