Asli Özmaral

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Asli Özmaral about her research stay at the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics,Trieste, Italy from 3 October 2014 - 16 January 2015

I was given a chance to do my research stay in the Geosciences (GEOS) working group led by Dr. Michele Rebesco at the Istituto Nazionale die Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) in Trieste (Italy) for 2,5 months with the financial support from GLOMAR and my working group. The aim of this research stay was to have a training, and also, make collaboration on the geophysical interpretation of the Kveithola Drift (north-western Barents Sea), so that the scientific publication, that is likely to be submitted by March this year, could be prepared.

MSM30 CORIBAR cruise were conducted with several scientists focusing on glacial geomorphology from the OGS (e.g., Dr. Michele Rebesco, Ranata Lucchi, Andrea Caburlotto). After our cruise, it was crucial to interpret echosounder profiles and sediment core logging results together with them. In order to associate seafloor features such as pockmarks and moats with subbotom profiles, I could work with the recent multibeam bathymetry map of the Kveithola Trough created by Daniela Accettalla from OGS. Moreover, I had an access to the previously collected seismic data (having a deeper penetration compared to our dataset) from Kveithola Trough, which helped me to understand the evolution of the Kveithola Trough in terms of meltwater sediment input and bottom current contolled deposition. Discussions with experts, especially with Michele, was quite beneficial to filter the useful information to be able determine as well as prepare contents of our draft paper.

The GEOS working group was great; friendly and helpful. I am grateful for Michele's attitude as "help desk with no hesitate" and would like to thank Dr. Renata Lucchi and Prof. Dr. Angelo Camerlenghi for their quite warm hospitality during my stay in Trieste. Thanks to GLOMAR and my working group, I could have this important experience and meet those great people there.
