Report of GLOMAR PhD student Anna Kloss about her research stay at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA from 15 August - 18 November 2011

In summer 2011, I spent three months at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, USA. The EAS covers a range of interesting research themes including paleoclimatology, oceanography and climate dynamics. Since the topic of my Ph.D. project is the glacial distribution of water mass in the Atlantic Ocean, I was part of the paleoclimate group.

My main reason for visiting the EAS was to work together with Dr. Lynch-Stieglitz who will be a co-author of my first paper. Her supervision was excellent and I enjoyed discussing my data with her. Due to some difficulties in using Mg/Ca measurements of benthic foraminifera I was not able to reconstruct sea water salinity and thus my scheduled approach to calculate sea water density could not be achieved. Hence we focused on my oxygen isotope data only. We include data sets from the Northeast- and west and Southwest Atlantic in order to detect if the findings we made in the Southeast Atlantic have a basin wide validity. The additional data had to meet certain requirements e.g. good quality, measured on a particular mass spectrometer and age control. The long-term expertise of Dr. Lynch-Stieglitz and her background information about some data sets and measuring techniques were very helpful and resulted in a high quality data base for my work. Besides the work on my Ph.D. project I took part in a paleoclimate modeling seminar in which the paleoclimate group discussed papers dealing with climate modeling in comparison to proxy data. In addition, I participated in some of the weekly seminar at the EAS held by invited speakers.

I enjoyed my time on the Georgia Tech campus, working at the EAS and the social activities with my colleagues. Therefore, I thank GLOMAR for this valuable experience from which I and my research work highly benefited. I am also glad that GLOMAR provided me with a laptop containing all important software for the whole time period; without it I would have gone back to paper and pen.
