VITALS

October 19 - 21, 2015, Halifax, Canada

During our research stay at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, we were invited to the VITALS (Ventilation, Interactions and Transports Across the Labrador Sea) workshop in Halifax from 19th - 21st October, 2015.
VITALS is an interdisciplinary research group focusing on the Labrador Sea. The aim of the VITALS research group is to understand the role of the Labrador Sea as a key component of the earth's climate system, including its uptake of oxygen, anthropogenic carbon, and exchange of heat with the atmosphere. The main research themes are listed as "Breathing" (i.e. gas exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere), "Horizontal Exchange" (especially focusing on freshwater fluxes) and "Climate Representation and Future Evolution", including the numerical modeling of the Labrador Sea. The group is divided into different teams (Fixed Sampling, Mobile Sampling, Biology, Gases, Historical Analysis, and Numerical Modeling) who focus on the different aspects of the research themes.
Monday started with an introduction, an overview of the teams, a session on " Hydrography and Water Masses", and ended with a session on" Technical and Theoretical Topics". Tuesday morning's session was "Biology", followed by " Gases". Our oral presentations with the titles "The North Atlantic Current in model and observation" (Tilia) and " Eddy-induced Temperature Exchange between the Subpolar and the Subtropical Gyre of the North Atlantic" (Vasco), were held in the afternoon session on the topic of "Circulation".

The meeting was concluded on Wednesday with half a day of open discussions on the future work of the individual teams.
We would like to thank Paul G. Myers from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, for inviting us to this profitable workshop and giving us the opportunity to present our work to a group of experts in the field of oceanography and ArcTrain for providing the financial support.
