ESA 2022

May 23rd - 27th 2022, Bonn, Germany

The ESA Living Planet Symposium (LPS) took place from 23rd to the 27th of May in Bonn, Germany. I participated in the conference starting from the 25th of May. This was my first big international conference during my PhD. After plenty of online conferences, it was very exciting for me to meet many colleagues in person for the first time. Several thousand participants made it to a lively event with many interesting discussions. The ESA LPS offered a large variety of sessions, talks, discussions, and events during this week.

On Wednesday, there was the “Climate day”. There were interesting discussions about, e.g., climate tipping point and climate adaption. I took a bit of time to discover the full venue with all its rooms and exhibitions. The old Bundestag was part of the World conference center and was an impressive room to listen to talks.

On Thursday, the focus was again more on the classical scientific sessions about the changing ocean, applications of unmanned aerial vehicles, and data products for climate applications.
On Friday, it was all about “Remote sensing of sea ice” with three oral sessions and a poster session. It was great to see so many cool projects and results all around sea ice. It was nice to meet with the community during these sessions because it was quite difficult to find specific people in a conference center with about 3000 people.

During this conference, I had my first scientific talk in front of a larger audience. My talk was about “High resolution helicopter-borne surface temperatures for satellite validation” in the session “Remote sensing of sea ice”. I enjoyed very much talking to a wider audience with direct interactions after the talk. During coffee breaks and poster sessions, there was good networking. I had interesting discussions with scientists I did not know before, which is the big advantage of in-person meetings.

The venue was close to the Rhine river. With the sunny weather, we had relaxing lunch breaks with a view on the Rhine. The nice setup made it easy to work, even during a public holiday. I had a great experience which was an important step in my PhD. I am very thankful for the support of ArcTrain which allowed me to participant in this conference.
