Research stay at McGill University (LT)

February 15th - May 20th 2022, Montreal, Canada

During my third year of my PhD, it was time for my research stay at the McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I spent three months (February – May) in the group of Bruno Tremblay. Covid changed my initial plans, but I am very happy that the exchange could finally happen. I had a great scientific exchange and wonderful support from the group. It was very nice to meet everyone in person after such a long time of online meetings. I enlarged and strengthened my network of great scientists doing important and inspiring work. With the change in the workplace, I started to work on a new study. I experienced a good work environment where I learned a lot. Changing the perspective and getting new insights helped me to go forward in my PhD.

My project
This research stay fitted very well as a framework for a short study that came up during my PhD analysis. The goal of the research stay was to analyze the thermal signatures of melt ponds in winter. The study is based on my main data set of high resolution surface temperature maps of Arctic sea ice in comparison to visual images from summer. In summer, melt ponds appear on the sea ice surface as a collection of meltwater.

Our goal is to understand the characteristics of the pre-conditioning of melt ponds. I worked together with Bruno Tremblay to investigate the thermodynamic reasoning of our findings. I appreciate very much that Bruno Tremblay took a lot of time to support me in my work and have regular discussions. I am very thankful to ArcTrain for this opportunity of a research stay in Canada. I also thank Bruno Tremblay for the invitation to his working group. It was a wonderful experience – professional and personal.

ArcTrain Annual Meeting
During my research stay, my first in-person annual meeting happened near Montreal. Thus, this was the first possibility to meet more Canadian partners in person. This collaboration is the heart of ArcTrain. The stronger connections from this meeting are very motivating to move forward out of the Covid restriction and increase the international collaborations.
