Research visit at SLF (LT)

August 8th - 19th 2022, Davos, Switzerland

Towards the end of my third year of my PhD, I took the possibility to visit Martin Schneebeli and his group at the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) in Davos, Switzerland. My visit was for two weeks in August. Our goal was to continue the work on our joint collaboration project. Martin and I initiated the working group on the “MOSAiC Winter Heat Budget” based on our work on different components of the Arctic sea ice heat budget with data from the MOSAiC expedition. This working group includes a large group of MOSAiC scientists from different fields. During my visit, we wrote a manuscript draft based on the first results we already presented during the MOSAiC science conference in April. The in-person collaboration made the work very productive with many interesting discussions while we could improve our understanding of the different heat flux components of the atmosphere, snow, ice, and ocean. At the end of the stay, we could already share the draft with the larger working group.

In the second week of my stay, I had the possibility to give a colloquium at the SLF about my work with Martin as well as my main PhD work about helicopter-borne infrared imaging during MOSAiC. As a follow-up to my talk, I got support from members of the SLF for the application of my aerial surface temperatures for the winter heat budget.

With Amy MacFarelane, a PhD student in Martin’s group, I am part of the organizing committee of the Responsible Science Initiative RISE, initiated by the MOSAiC community. We used this opportunity to discuss the current tasks of our working group to keep the momentum after a small summer break going.

I am happy that I had the opportunity to visit the SLF in Davos and expand my network in the snow community. I am very thankful to ArcTrain for this opportunity of the research visit in Davos. I also thank Martin Schneebeli for the invitation to his working group.
