Ocean Sciences Meeting 2014

February 23-28, 2014, Honolulu, Hawaii

The Ocean Sciences Meeting 2014 was held in Honolulu, Hawaii USA in the Hawaii Convention Center from 23‐ 28 February 2014. Around 5600 scientists from all over the world in different marine science disciplines attended the meeting. Thanks to ArcTrain funding, which was used to pay for the flight to Honolulu, for the accommodation, daily allowance, the registration and abstract fee I was able to attend and gave a poster presentation with the title „Variability of the North Atlantic Current: high resolution model data versus in situ measurements“ within the session „North Atlantic ocean dynamics: from natural fluctuations to externally forced response“. During this poster presentation I had the opportunity to discuss my first results of my PhD project with other scientists working in the North Atlantic and get to know some faces behind names already familiar from papers. By attending talks and poster presentations within the North Atlantic session I learned more about recent and ongoing studies in my working area. From talks and poster presentations of other sessions, plenary talks, work shops and tutorials I got an overview of ongoing research and an insight into different marine science disciplines. Overall to attend the Ocean Sciences Meeting 2014 was a great addition to my PhD, since I gave my first poster presentation at a conference, I could learn a lot about ongoing research in my study area and met many other scientists.
