EGU General Assembly

April 23 - April 28, 2017, Vienna, Austria

From the 23th of April 2017 to the 28th of April 2017, I attended the EGU General Assembly in Vienna. It represents the largest European annual event in the field of geosciences and covers a broad variety of topics and many different sessions with several different formats of presentations including talks, poster/PICO presentations, discussions and workshops or smaller splinter meetings.
Besides very specialized sessions, there were many talks and discussions aiming at an interdisciplinary audience, including scientific and political debates such as ‘Is 2 degrees possible without relying on carbon storage and capture?’ or ‘Make facts great again: how can scientists stand up for science?’. Moreover, it also included different topics that were especially interesting for early career scientist.
For my work of special interest were the sessions within the ocean sciences programme group. I had the chance to actively participate with a poster presentation on the ‘Variability of the North Atlantic Current: A comparison of satellite altimetry and observational data from PIES’ in the session ‘The North Atlantic: natural variability and global change’ which was organized among others by my supervisors Prof. Dr. Monika Rhein and Prof. Dr. Paul Myers. During the poster session, I discussed my research with many other researchers in the field of oceanography which provided me with a lot of input and feedback directly concerning my work but also in terms of presenting it. Moreover, I got the opportunity to meet and talk to some of the ‘famous’ researchers of whom I already had heard and read a lot.
Besides all this, I had the chance to meet some ArcTrain members from Canada for the first time and especially also to meet my Canadian supervisor.
All in all, this conference was very valuable for my research project and I would like to thank ArcTrain for the support to attend.
