EGU 2018

April 8 - 13, 2018, Vienna, Austria

Summary
Beatriz, Lina and I went to the EGU GA 2018, which took place in Vienna. We presented our research at the conference, by either giving a talk or presenting a poster. In addition to presenting our own work, we attended the pre-icebreaker, the icebreaker, many talks, poster sessions, the ArcTrain splinter meeting, short courses, medal lectures, and much more.

Activities & personal benefits
Beatriz, Lina and I went to the EGU GA 2018, a large geosciences conference in Vienna. This year’s EGU GA was the third one for Beatriz and the first one for Lina and me. As first timers we decided to go the icebreaker and even to the pre-icebreaker on Sunday, to get a little more prepared for this big conference. Throughout the week we met some of the people from the icebreakers. This was a nice experience, considering that there were over 15.000 scientists.

A snapshot of ArcTrain Germany at the EGU.

The three of us benefited of the opportunity to present our work at the conference, either by giving a talk or by presenting a poster:
Impact of Meltwater Events on Detrital Fluxes along Melville Bay, Northwest Greenland
Impact of frontal ablation on estimates of ice mass stored in glaciers of Alaska
The influence of natural climate variability on Canadian Arctic glaciers during the last millennium
Also other work that we are involved in got presented:
Testing the consistency between changes in simulated climate and European glacier length over the past millennium
The Open Global Glacier Model
(If you like to read more about the presence of the OGGM at the conference you can read Beatriz her blog post ).
Next to presenting our work we went to many talks, the poster sessions, some medal lectures. It was during those times that we networked, learned about the latest progress in our field of science and gained new inspiration. On different occasions throughout the week we met people from ArcTrain Canada. At the ArcTrain splinter meeting we updated each other about the latest news, we talked about future plans and discussed logistics.
If you would like to know more about our experience you can read the ArcTrain blog post by Lina or follow the ArcTrain twitter.
