Report of GLOMAR PhD student Xiting Liu about his participation in the Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology at the University of Urbino, Italy, 16-31 July 2012

The 9th USSP course was held at the University of Urbino, Italy July 11-31, 2012. About 60 students participated in the summer school, including early career Graduate and post Graduate from around the world.

The Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology of the USSP consortium focuses on past climate dynamics with special emphasis on the analysis of the long-term carbon cycling and its implications in the understanding of present and future climates. Senior scientists from around the world gave lectures in the areas of stratigraphy, geochemistry, models and integration of results. For example, the summer school gave me the opportunity to learn advanced knowledge on various types of climatological proxy and their use in paleoclimate reconstructions, especially organic chemistry proxies.

With its duration of three weeks a large number of excellent lectures were given, including climate changes in different geological history, which expanded my understanding of climate changes beyond Quaternary, such as PETM (Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum). We visited several classic sections for studying of climate changes on July 15, of which attracted me mostly was the K/T boundary transition of the Bottaccione section (see the picture). The final stages of the USSP mainly focused on climate models, which help me to better understand the mechanisms of climate change. There was a lecture on IODP mentioned MARUM at the last day of the USSP, making me feel very proud of the excellent cluster.

During the poster session and Cioppino Conference, I introduced my PhD project to other students and experts and discussed with them. I have benefited from recommendations and feedback from the communication. And the USSP was also a social experience, an opportunity to meet new people who have become colleagues and friends.

In brief, the USSP was fruitful for me and the gained knowledge will increase my confidence in the following work. I would strongly recommend the Urbino Summer School to every student who is working in the field of paleoclimate. Finally, I am very grateful for the GLOMAR's financial support.
