Report of GLOMAR PhD student Rike Zimmermann about her participation in the Eawag Summer School 2011 on “Sediments as archives of environmental change” held in Kastanienbaum, Switzerland, 4-15 July 2011

Thanks to financial support from GLOMAR, I was able to attend the Eawag Summer School 2011 on “Sediments as archives of environmental change” held in Kastanienbaum, Switzerland, July 4 -15, 2011.

The Eawag Kastanienbaum is situated right on the shores of beautiful Lake Lucerne. The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology or Eawag (“Eidgenössische Anstalt für Wasserversorgung, Abwasserreinigung und Gewässerschutz”) itself is a Swiss research institution for aquatic research with an excellent infrastructure. Belonging to the ETH domain, it carries out research, teaching and consulting and forms a link between science and practical application, and is also regularly holding summer schools on various topics.

20 students representing various institutions from all over Europe participated in this course, combining a broad range of research topics. This year’s Eawag Summer School focused on “sediments as archives of environmental change”, introducing methods, concepts and applications of sediment-based research activities and provided a very comprehensive overview of both theory and practical field work. The course covered a variety of approaches, such as sedimentological, geophysical, petrophysical, geochemical and microbiological analyses to gain an extensive understanding of sedimentary processes and their link to the environment. Apart from daily lectures, the vicinity of the Lake Lucerne provided the opportunity to get out onto the lake and immediately apply the knowledge obtained in theory by doing seismics, collecting sediment traps or obtaining cores and water samples, which were afterwards analysed in exercises. Additional field trips and the on-site housing encouraged socialising and enabled me not only to establish new contacts, but to gain new friends.

I am very glad and grateful that GLOMAR gave me the opportunity to attend this inspiring course by providing financial support. The whole summer school offered me an enormous amount of scientific inputs and new ideas and proved as an excellent addition to my current work. I strongly recommend this summer school to all students interested in sedimentology!
