Report of GLOMAR PhD student Mahmudul Islam about his participation in the Synthesis meeting of a research project entitled “Unravelling the Vicious Circle: Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Livelihoods in Small-scale Fisheries” in Mwanza, Tanzania, 14-18 October 2009

The synthesis meeting of a research project titled “Unravelling the Vicious Circle: Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Livelihoods in Small-scale Fisheries” sponsored by Norwegian Research Council, was held on 14th -18th October 2009 in Mwanza, Tanzania. The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania was the local organizing institution.
Thirteen case studies on poverty and small-scale fisheries from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Uganda, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Poland, and Turkey were presented. These case studies covered a wide array of research areas questioning poverty in small-scale fisheries. The meeting had a workshop character.-that means sufficient time was allocated to go thoroughly into each others paper contribution. In this synthesis meeting, my contribution was to present a paper on poverty small-scale fisheries nexus in Bangladesh. Valuable comments and ideas were received for further improvement of the article. At this synthesis meeting I also had the opportunity to discuss my research project with experts who have been working for years in the research area of my PhD project. The discussion helps me to fine-tuning my research questions.

The synthesis meeting was followed by an excursion to a fishing village on the side of Lake Victoria to see fisher’s livelihoods. I would like to thank GLOMAR for funding to attend the meeting.
