Report of GLOMAR PhD student Katja Hockun about her participation in the DARWIN Summer School on Biogeosciences in Nyenrode and Texel, Netherlands, 1-13 July 2012

From the 1st to the 13th of July, seventeen participants from all over the world (Mexico, Philippines, India, Serbia, China, France ect.) including me, took part at the 2nd DARWIN Summer School. The Summer School was held one week in Nyenrode, close to Utrecht, and one week on Texel at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in the Netherlands.

During the first week we heart lectures giving us a general introduction in biogeoscience. We also had the opportunity to present ourselves and our projects. The lectures were supposed to impart basic knowledge in paleoclimatology and geology. The purpose of the first week was to equal the knowledge of the interdisciplinary group to the same level. Unfortunately, we did not have the possibility to visit the University of Utrecht and get to know their research facility. But I enjoyed staying at the wonderful historical campus at the Business University Nyenrode close to Utrecht.

The 2nd week was very interesting and more practical orientated. Usually, in the mornings we had lectures preparing us for the following trainings in the afternoon. During this week at the NIOZ we gained interesting insights in microbiology and organic geochemistry. Stefan Schouten, one of the lecturers, improved our general understanding of the complexity of biomarker and their application in science. Besides, he gave us a very good introduction to the laboratory facilities and measurement devices. In retrospect the dynamic of the group was very good and we enjoyed the stay very much.

Last but not least, I want to thank GLOMAR for the opportunity to get to know so many interesting and nice people and to get an insight in other research institutes.
