Report of GLOMAR PhD student Deborah Tangunan about her participation in the Basic Course in Climate Time Series Analysis in Heckenbeck, Germany, 8 - 12 August 2016

As a paleoclimate researcher, I know that it is always necessary to connect my own sets of data with time. All of these datasets will only have meaningful interpretations when linked to records associated with time-dependent series and processes. I have this thinking when I started looking for a course that can help me with my data analysis.

The climate time series course analysis offered by Manfred Mudelsee is just the perfect course to take for this purpose. I attended the basic course on time series analysis because I want to learn spectral analysis and the course actually gave me more than what I have expected. The course started with an introduction on fundamental concepts on statistics, followed by their applications and then using them to analyse our own data. We learned about booststrap, persistence, probability density function, regression, correlation and spectral analysis and we were also taught with the step-by-step technique on how to use the softwares for each type of statistical analysis.

I have always been intimidated with such kinds of data analysis tools especially that it involves dealing with statistics, some complicated formulas, and code writing. The summer school presented so many software options to use on data analysis and Manfred advised us to pick one based on our own preference – the most suitable method for our own data depending on their characteristics and what we want to know. During the course, I realized that it is not really intimidating after all, that there are endless ways and boundless possibilities to analyze my own data and the choice of the right tools depends on what I want to know. I also like it that the last sessions were allotted for presenting our own data in class, get some feedbacks, and analysing them on the spot with our own software choice.

All in all, I have learned so much from the summer school and I would like to thank GLOMAR not just for funding my participation but for helping me find this course.
