Report of GLOMAR PhD student Célia Santos about her participation in the NESSC PhD course “Molecular Organic Biogeochemistry”, Texel, Netherlands, 2 – 6 November 2015

The NESSC PhD course “Molecular Organic Biogeochemistry” took place from 2 to 6 November 2015 in the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), Texel, The Netherlands. This course was mainly focused on the application of organic biogeochemistry tools on paleoclimatology, paleoceanography and microbiology. Organized by the NIOZ organic geochemistry scientists, it provided participants with an advanced working knowledge on analytical techniques, biomarker lipids and molecular phylogeny, organic proxies in paleoclimatology and paleoceanography, intact polar lipids, and compound specific stable carbon and hydrogen isotope analysis. The course consisted of three parts: lectures, practical demonstrations of analytical equipment and data interpretation, and student’s presentations. Ca. 30 participants attended this expertise course, providing a good opportunity to discuss ongoing research and network on an interdisciplinary level.

Taking part on the NESSC PhD course also allowed me to present my ongoing results regarding diatom related lipid biomarkers, and to receive comments which benefited my work.

Overall, it was an interesting and intensive learning experience which contribute very positively to the progress of my PhD project. I am thankful to GLOMAR whose financial support allowed me to participate in this course.
