Report of GLOMAR PhD student Benjamin Baasch about his participation in the Giambiagi Winter School at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, 16-20 July 2012

Every year the Physics Department of the School of Exact and Natural Sciences at University of Buenos Aires organises the Giambiagi Winter School. Its main purpose is to offer graduate students and young researchers an up-to-date perspective to diverse topics in physics. This year the school was devoted to the field of applied and environmental geophysics and focused on analysis and interpretation of geophysical data, applied to near surface and reservoir geophysics. Special emphasis was laid on forward and inverse modelling, which was of special interest for me.

During one week experts from North and South America as well from Europe gave lectures and provided related workshops on latest research results. This combination allowed the participants to bridge the gap between theoretical background knowledge and real-world applications.

Some courses were directly linked to the topic of my PhD project, such as these about “Current developments in electromagnetic induction methods” or “Acoustic-electromagnetic analogy”, while others gave me insights into neighbouring disciplines in applied geophysics (e.g. seismics, ground penetrating radar).

I was really impressed by the quality of most of the lectures, which were not only a demonstration of first-class scientific knowledge, but also a good example of how to present science.

During two poster sessions I had the chance to talk to other scientists and to present my results. These presentations led to fruitful discussions on problems concerning data processing, calibration and inverse modelling.

Due to the participation in the Giambiagi Winter School, I could establish contacts to scientist in South America and deepen my knowledge in applied geophysics.

Finally, I would like to thank GLOMAR for providing funding to cover travel and accommodation costs.
