Report of GLOMAR PhD student Anna-Maria Hubert about her participation in the IFLOS Summer Academy on the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law in Hamburg, Germany, 21 July - 16 August 2012

Thanks to generous financial support from GLOMAR, I was able to participate in the 2012 IFLOS Summer Academy at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany. The Summer Academy offers comprehensive one-month course on the law of the sea and maritime law, which also covers related topics such as international business and finance, and the marine sciences. The list of distinguished faculty included several judges of the Tribunal, as well as academics and industry leaders. In addition to the lectures, the course incorporated practical professional skills development into the curriculum, e.g., by offering a workshop on maritime boundary delimitation negotiation. A highlight was being part of the winning team of the annual Moot Court, an exercise which involves simulated court proceedings involving the drafting of written and oral arguments before a panel of judges that included Judge Türk of the Tribunal. Overall, the course provided a wonderful opportunity to learn from and interact with judges, leading academics and practitioners working in the area of oceans law, as well as connect with other early-career legal scholars from around the globe.

The IFLOS Summer Academy was useful for deepening my knowledge of the contemporary law of the sea, a subject area that relates directly to my GLOMAR Ph.D. project that examines the legal implications of potentially risky marine scientific research activities. I was also interested in participating in the course to learn more about the private law side of oceans law (maritime and shipping law) to broaden my expertise in this subject area of international and enhance my future career prospects.

I would like to acknowledge the financial support of GLOMAR, which made my participation in the IFLOS Summer Academy possible.
