Report of GLOMAR PhD student Andrés Castillo Llarena about his participation in the Karthaus Summer School on Ice Sheets and Glaciers in the Climate System, in Karthaus, Italy, from 23 May to 2 June 2023

I had the privilege of attending the Karthaus Summer School on Ice Sheets and Glaciers in the Climate System. This event provided an exceptional opportunity to connect with doctoral researchers and professors from diverse disciplines, all focused on the study of ice sheets
and glaciers. The summer school served as a platform for learning about special topics addressed by the Summer School such as numerical modelling, ice rheology, sliding and hydraulics, and ice-ocean interaction in a theoretical and practical manner, providing me with a broad overview of different methods. Furthermore, the chance to have the experience of going on an excursion to a rock glacier, and learning about landscape and geomorphology.

Beyond the scientific benefits, the summer school offered an opportunity to establish personal connections with other researchers. The diverse backgrounds of the participants enabled me to expand both my social and professional network. The connections established during this event have the potential to lead to future collaborations. Furthermore, the informal settings outside the formal sessions allowed for the formation of relationships with like-minded people who share similar interests and aspirations.

The town of Karthaus, as well as the venue, provided an excellent setting for scientific exchange and networking. The landscape and the diverse gastronomy added to the overall experience. The charming atmosphere of the town complemented the rigorous academic program, fostering a conducive environment for learning, collaboration, and personal growth.

In conclusion, attending the Karthaus Summer School was an enriching experience that enabled me to network with researchers from various parts of the world, explore new research areas and interdisciplinary approaches, and establish valuable personal and professional connections. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organising committee of the course for awarding me the fee waiver from IGS, as well as to Glomar for co-funding my participation in this summer school. Their support made this experience possible and greatly contributed to my academic and professional development.
