Marine Sedimentology

Dear Guests,

the research group Marine Sedimentology ("AG Hebbeln") performs its research and teaching activities at the University of Bremen in the framework of the MARUM (Center for Marine Environmental Sciences) and in close cooperation with the Department of Geosciences. Our studies focus on various aspects of Marine Geology and Sedimentology, namely Palaeoceanography & Climate, Cold-Water Coral Ecosystems, and Seafloor Dynamics.

Our Mission

In times of a rapidly changing global environment it will be increasingly difficult to assess how the Earth will develop in the future. A prerequisite for such assessments is an understanding of the dynamics of climate and environmental change, for example, about the temporal development, regional differences, and relevant cause-and-effect relations.

With a focus on individual ocean regions and on specific marine ecosystems our research intends to constantly improve our knowledge in this field. In this context, our studies follow two guiding principles: (1) "The past is the window into the future" - as only for the past we can study the processes that will shape our future environment, and (2) "The present is the key to the past" – as only a thorough understanding of present processes allows us to interpret archives recording the Earth's history.

Coral Symposium in Edinburgh

ISDSC8

May/June 2023 - The 8th International Symposium on Deep-Sea Corals took place in Edinburgh from the 28th May to 2nd June 2023. Our group presented their work on cold-water corals in one keynote (Claudia), three full talks (Dierk, Jürgen, Luis) and two speed talks (Rodrigo, Chelsea). It was also a (re-)union of past, present and future(?) members of the working group!!!
