Excursion

The excursion will take place on Wednesday 3 April from 9:00 until approx. 17:00.

We will meet in Bremen and go by bus to Dangast to look at the Jade Bay, a large intertidal bay at the border of the Wadden Sea. There, we visit the tidal flats and walk along the dike, guided by Prof. Burg Flemming. Topics include

- Development of the Wadden Sea coast

- Wadden Sea sediment transport processes

- Storm floods, coastal protection, and land reclamation

- 'Coastal squeeze' and effects on the environment

Around midday, we travel by bus to the Weser estuary.

After discussing estuarine processes, we sail on the MS Senator back to Bremen. During the cruise, participants will be able to enjoy the beautiful Weser River, and take more time for socialising and discussions, with also some information about the dunes which cover the Weser.

Food during the excursion includes packed lunch in the morning and cake and drinks on the boat.

To know more about the Jade Bay and its geology, you may have a look at the slides prepared by Prof Dr Burg Flemming. A handout of the slides will be distributed prior to the excursion.
