Research Interests

  • large scale ocean circulation
  • millennial-scale climate variability during the last glacial (DO-events)
  • mixing in the ocean
  • biogeochemical cycles in the ocean

Current project

I am currently employed in the Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor-Earth’s Uncharted Interface”, in the subproject Enabler Modeling. The overall research topics to be investigated in this subproject are

  • the interaction of marine ecosystems with the shelf-sea and open ocean circulation
  • how these determine fluxes of carbon and nutrients and thus set the budgets of marine biogeochemical cycles
  • more specifically, the role of sinking biogenic particles and the influx of nutrients from sediments for biogeochemical cycles will be investigated

To tackle these research questions we will develop a modeling framework based on a regional set-up of the ocean model MITgcm. Currently we are preparing a set-up of the MITgcm for the North-West African Upwelling area. This exemplary studying area was choosen due to its high productivity, high sedimentation rates and the existence of long data time series for comparison with the model. In order to study above mentioned research question a model of early diagenesis of pelagic sediments (MEDUSA) and an advanced parameterization of particle aggregation and disaggregation will be implemented into MITgcm.
