The #NSFfunded research cruise AT50-14 “SeepDOM” (11th – 20th Aug) on RV Atlantis and with DSV Alvin was successful. The great research team, led by Laura Lapham #UMCES, John Pohlman #USGS, Jeff Seewald, Stefan Sievert #WHOI, Rachel Younge #FSU, Karen Lloyd #UTK, Tim Weiss, Mario Veloso #GEOMAR, and Lennart Stock #MARUM, to name but a few, investigated methane seeps at Hydrate Ridge (offshore Oregon) to assess the impact of aged methane-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on the ocean carbon cycle. Due to weather-related issues, the research area was expanded to Astoria Canyon to explore biogenic and aged methane seepage into the ocean. Together, we will work on analyzing onboard and offboard results from collected environmental samples to enhance our understanding of the significance of methane fluids and methane derived DOC injection into our oceans.
