Report of GLOMAR PhD student James Collins about his research stay at Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Bergen, Norway, from 15 May - 3 July 2010
Funding from GLOMAR allowed me to travel to Bergen for my research stay abroad, from May-July 2010.
The main aim of the stay was to perform Mg/Ca measurements on planktonic foraminifera, a proxy for sea surface temperature. This involved learning how to pick, crush and clean the foraminifera tests as well as how to operate the ICP-AES machine. This was completed with the expertise of Dr Vincent Scao, a French scientist working in Bergen. In addition, I was also able to discuss results with Dr Trond Dokken an expert in palaeoceanography, who is also a member of my thesis committee. I was also able to work effectively on revisions of a manuscript. The Bjerknes Centre is relatively small institute compared to the MARUM and this give the intstitue a close-knit feel. Most of the labs are located in the main science faculty which is located close by. Bergen is a small and attractive city, surrounded by hills and fjords. However, it is very expensive, which mean that I had to stick to a tight budget.
