Physical properties discrete (PP)

In order to preserve pore water properties discrete samples will be taken from the core-catcher or cross-section ends at an interval of one every four cores in Hole A and one every two cores in subsequent holes. These samples will be taken for cores where the nature of recovery allows this kind of sampling, i.e. recovery of mud or fine carbonate sands.

A 4 ml sample will be taken using a 10 ml plastic syringe (9 cm long empty; 11 cm when containing 4 ml; 14 cm if full; weight 5.61 g). The syringe will be stored with the open end upwards and sealed using clingfilm secured with sellotape prior to placing in a sample bag. The syringe and sample combination will be weighed on the ship in order for any water loss to be identified on re-weighing onshore. The sample contained by the syringe can be placed directly into a beaker suitable for taking measurements using the pycnometer during the onshore science party. The samples will be stored with the other cores in the temperature-controlled container (+4° C).
