Core splitting

Due to the nature of MSP expeditions (limited space and time) cores are generally not split at sea but during the Onshore Science Party in Bremen.

The core splitter developed at MARUM is designed for cutting core sections of up to 1.5 m in length and up to 8 cm in diameter.

Splitting of soft sediment from IODP Exp. 302 (ACEX)

Splitting of hard rocks from IODP Exp. 310 (Tahiti)

Soft sediment are split using two blades on each side to cut the liner in combination with a metal wire or plastic string to separate the core into two halves.
A diamond blade mounted on the saw is used for hard rock core splitting.
