The International Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP) and its predecessors generated a treasure trove of Cenozoic climate and carbon cycle dynamics. Yet, it remains unclear why climate and carbon cycle change their responses to astronomical insolation forcing under changing geologic boundary conditions. In this seminar, we discuss the carbon and oxygen isotope evolution of the deep-ocean using the d13C and d18O megasplices, and how they can be used to characterize the changes in climate and carbon cycle response to astronomical forcing in the icehouse portion of the Cenozoic, from the latest Eocene to the present.
