Current-Controlled Sea Floor Archives: Coral Mounds and Contourites
28 August - 1 September 2017
at the MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences and
the IODP Bremen Core Repository, University of Bremen, Germany
The major goal is to bring PhD students and young Postdocs in touch with IODP at an early stage of their career, inform them about the exciting research within IODP as (I)ODP and DSDP have been proven to be the most successful internationally collaborative research programs in the history of Earth sciences, and and to prepare them for future participation in IODP expeditions. Such training will be achieved by taking the summer school participants on a “virtual ship” where they get familiarized with a wide spectrum of state-of-the-art analytical technologies and core description and scanning methods according to the high standards of IODP expeditions. In addition, the thematic topic of the summer school will be reviewed by various scientific lectures by the leading experts in the field.
Location and Organisation
The ECORD Summer School on “Current-Controlled Sea Floor Archives: Coral Mounds and Contourites” 2017 will take place from 21 August to 1 September 2017 at the MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, Bremen University, Germany. It is organized by by Prof. Dr. Dierk Hebbeln, Graduate Dean of the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences (GLOMAR), Dr. Ursula Röhl, Head of the IODP Bremen Core Repository (BCR), and by David van Rooij, Renard Centre of Marine Geology, Ghent University, Belgium.
MARUM and its International Graduate School for Marine Sciences GLOMAR, as well as the BCR jointly offer the unique training possibilities used for this summer school by providing laboratory and seminar facilities.
The striking commonality between contourite drifts and cold-water coral mounds is their dependence on a dynamic bottom current regime as well as on sediment supply to generate impressive sedimentary archives. By having the capacity to form such distinct positive sea floor structures, both systems are characterized by enhanced sediment deposition. Con-sequently, these sedimentary features can serve as paleo-archives with clearly enhanced temporal resolution of the resulting paleo-records. Such high-resolution records often differ in the temporal ranges and/or temporal resolutions provided with, for example, high and low temporal resolution alternating between both archives driven by changing forcing conditions. Thus, combining different signals and mound versus contourite records will be among many promising tasks for future cooperation of contourite and cold-water coral mound researchers.

ECORD provides scholarships for students from ECORD member countries to attend ECORD summer schools.
Applications should be sent to the ESSAC Office. Please, see how to apply for an ECORD Scholarship following this link: http://www.ecord.org/education/scholarship/
IMPORTANT: Application for an ECORD Scholarship is independent of the application and registration process to an ECORD Summer School.
Accommodation as well as meals have to be covered by the participants directly.
We reserved beds for the participants of the ECORD Summer School in the hostel townside and a few rooms at the hotel 7-things close to the University of Bremen from 20 August to 1 September 2017.
Please, arrange your bookings directly with the hostel or hotel. You may refer to "ECORD Summer 2017" in order of getting one of the preserved places for our group.
