Frederike Wilckens

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Frederike Wilckens about her participation in the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco from 12 to 16 December 2016

The AGU (American Geophysical Union) Fall meeting is the largest international Earth and space science meeting. The conference is held at the Moscone Convention Center located in San Francisco. In 2016 more than 25000 scientists attended this conference presenting about 22000 talks and posters in more than 1700 sessions covering. Covered research fields ranged from biogeosciences, ocean sciences, paleoclimatic sciences, atmospheric sciences, tectonics, mineralogy to space sciences.

I attended the Fall meeting for the first time and was impressed by the large selection of poster and oral presentations. Due to this huge amount of sessions it took quite a while to find the perfect session, in which I could present my research. I presented my poster “Influence of magmatic volatiles on boron isotope compositions in vent fluids from the Eastern Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea” in the session Fluids, Crystals, and Melts: The Role of Volatiles in Volcanic Processes from Mantle to Surface”. Overall, this session appeared to be very suitable for my research. During the poster session I had very fruitful discussions with young scientists as well as renowned scientists in this field. In these discussions, I got a lot of positive feedback and obtained new ideas in the interpretation of my data and gained a broader knowledge in many topics related to my PhD project.

Besides the scientific program, I visited several evening events such as the ‘international reception’, the ‘geochemical reception’ and the ‘Networking Reception for Early Career Female Scientists and Students’. These receptions gave a good opportunity to get in touch with other participants, meet friends working in other institutions as well as some of the people I got to know during the Goldschmidt conference in 2015. Furthermore, San Francisco is an interesting city to explore and I took some time to visit some of the famous sights.

Overall, the AGU Fall meeting was a very fruitful conference for me and I would like to thank GLOMAR for the financial support, which made it possible to take part in this conference.
