Report of GLOMAR PhD student Holger Kühnhold about his participation in the Summer School on Development Policy at the University of Bonn, Germany, 1 - 12 August 2016

With the generous funding from GLOMAR, I was able to attend the summer school on development policy at the University of Bonn, in August 2016. The course was advertised as suitable for graduate and postgraduate students as well as young professionals from any field of study or discipline. Even though the topic was out of the scope of my PhD project, the addressed curriculum sounded appealing to me, and I expected to gain insights into a novel field of science. Moreover, I expected to obtain unique impressions and information about the work of international organizations, which I consider as a prospective career path for me.

The summer school was organized in cooperation with the German Corporation for International Cooperation / Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The objective of the course was an introduction to the main areas of development policy, including detailed examinations of crucial issues, through discussions with professionals from international organizations, governmental institutions, development organizations and research institutions. The program consisted of classes imparting fundamental knowledge, guest lectures on selected key issues and excursions to the European Central Bank, Frankfurt am Main, the Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Bonn, the GIZ and its associated Academy for International Cooperation (AIZ), Bad Honnef and to the UN-Campus, Bonn.

The course schedule was packed, but the mix of classes, guest lectures and excursions made it possible to stay focused and to gather a lot of information. For me the trip to the GIZ/AIZ was the highlight. On that day we got an introduction into the company structure of GIZ and had interactive seminars with GIZ staff on development policy and career planning. Besides the great overall course curriculum, I enjoyed it very much to interact within the group of 30 participants from all over the world.

The Summer School provided a great opportunity for me to gather first insights into the field of development policy. With the freshly gained knowledge and the network that I was able to initiate during the course, I am sure that I build a good foundation for enhancing my career in this field.
