Belcher Islands, Hudson Bay

The Belcher Supergroup is of significant geobiological interest since cherty dolomitic stromatolites of this thick carbonate platform host some of the oldest microfossil evidence for cyanobacteria (Eoenteophysalis Belcherensis) as first described by Hans Hofmann, but its remote location in the Hudson Bay complicates studies. Together with Dominic Papineau, Paul Strother, Wouter Bleeker and Marilyn Fogel, and funded by a NASA DDF grant, we traveled to the Belcher Islands on a small fishing boat to study this thick, ca. 2.1 billion year old sedimentary sequence in the field and systematicaly collect a large number of samples for a variety of geochemical and microfossil studies.
