PhD Project

Natural and anthropogenic forcing on marine pelagic ecosystems

The ocean has complex ecosystems from the coastal to open ocean, which are essential aspects to sustain the earth environments by orchestrating the major portion of biogeochemical cycles of our planet. Although natural driven factors and dynamical ocean system constantly alter the biochemical properties of pelagic ecosystems, but the increase of human pollutions contribute more pressures to the environment leading to ocean warming, acidification, and deoxygenation. Until now the rate in which natural and anthropogenic processes responsible for current changes in pelagic ecosystems is far from clear long-term observations. These issues inspire the background of this PhD project to distinct the signals of the natural and anthropogenic parameters in the marine pelagic ecosystems. This project will focus on (paleo)ecological reconstructions of marine pelagic microfossil (particularly dinoflagellate cysts) associations that represent various trophic levels in high temporal resolution sedimentary archives, covering the pre-industrial and industrial time span. The reconstruction is targeted to unveil the shifts of the marine pelagic ecosystem in the past and present times, to enable future climate projection.
