MARUM I, room 3030

Programme

  1. Presentations:
    • We welcome Kim Vane as a new member of research theme C and she will present herself to the group and tell us about her PhD project
    • Amanda Ford will tell us about her participation in a Highland Statistics Course in Banff, Canada in September 2014
  2. Treasure-box of useful websites:
Some time ago, we held two seminars with the topics “treasure-box of methods” and “treasure-box of software”. There, we presented and talked through different devices and gadgets as well as useful software, which - across disciplines - you might make use of in your PhD but also in the time following your graduation.
I am a great friend of trying to give you as much practical help and information as possible that could be useful for your science in general and hopeful persist and inspire you even after you have graduated. At the same time, I am curious to learn more from you as well. So I would like to take up on our treasure-box series and call the “treasure-box of useful websites” for this month’s seminar!
The idea is to present web-sites that you know of where you can access all sort of interesting and useful information for your work, for example: on meta-data on climate parameters, sun- and moonset and -rise, tides, depth data, copyright safe images for talks, maps….
I would, therefore, like to ask you to brainstorm and bring along some suggestions of websites that you found useful during your work (can be anything, really). We will then present them to each other and share.
  3. Outlook for coming seminars:
Many of you are approaching their final weeks or months of their PhDs and are certainly very busy with their final analyses and writing procedures. Especially to those who are about to defend their PhDs, but also to all other members who want to practice for conferences and such:

Please don’t forget that you always have the possibility to practice your defense or conference talks in the seminar. The group can give you good feedback and constructive criticism, from which not only you, but the entire group can profit. Let me know if you want to make use of this opportunity! Also I would like to discuss general ideas and suggestions for the coming seminars. Comments, questions or ideas for topics you would like to discuss in the seminar are highly welcome!
