Report of GLOMAR PhD student Maren Bender about her participation in the "Regional Sea Level Changes and Coastal Impacts" conference 2017 at the Columbia University, USA from 10 to 14 July 2017

This conference took place in New York City, USA, from the 10th to 14th of July at the Columbia University in Manhattan. It was organized to bring together sea-level scientists from different research fields to combine paleo and present sea-level studies in order to improve predictions for future sea-level rise.

Each day included invited and contributed talks, poster sessions where scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday. My session was on Tuesday morning. I had the great chance to present my PhD project on a poster with lots of people passing by, because of the perfect position. I was deeply impressed by the audience. Lots of very important sea-level researchers participated in this highly ranked conference. On Monday, the icebreaker gave me the opportunity to talk to some of these experienced researchers in the old Library at Columbia University. Those, that were interested in my work, visited my poster on Tuesday. After four very interesting and exhausting days, we were rewarded by a dinner cruise on the Hudson River. This was definitely the most amazing action in NYC. The Hornblower Infinity left on Pier 40 on the westside of Manhattan and the eastside of the Hudson River. It went to the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and along the fantastic and awesome skyline of the city. In front of the Statue the ship turned and we had a great view of NYC, Ellis Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Another benefit of this cruise was a nice three-course dinner. This cruise took three hours and started after the conference was finished for that day. On Friday, the last day, final talks, some rewards for the Poster presentations and closing events where held. Overall, this conference was very interesting and I had the chance to learn a lot about the different studies and to widen my understanding of various approaches. I would like to thank the University of Bremen, the Germany Excellence Initiative and ZMT for the financial support and the World Meteorological Organization for further funding.
