Student projects on the Altenwalder Geest - South of Cuxhaven

Daniel Hepp, Tobias Mörz, Frank Lisker, Sven Jensen

Over the last 12 years the rich glacial sand deposits of the Altenwalder Geest have become a famous testing ground and analog model for the Offshore Foundation Industry.

So far more than 11 major industrial size and scientific projects have been taken place to make use of the unique properties of the so called Cuxhaven sand. From testing of offshore ground investigation equipment to large scale piling and decommissioning to science driven monitoring and method development – many aspects have been covered and explored.

Missing so far was a well published stratigraphy and thorough revision of the Geology above and below the famous Cuxhaven sand deposit adding outcrop records to the vast amount of CPTu, drilling and logging record. Fortunately 4 students of the Geoscience Department, University Bremen, the MARUM Research Faculty supported by Geo-Engineering.org GmbH and the Bremen Geological Survey are filling this gap with hard work and great enthusiasm.

Complex interplay between fluvial sandbar and post-glacial lake evolution.

The so called "Cuxhaven Sand" - an ultra dense, over-consolidated, North Sea type sand deposit is dominated by fluvial sands with minor channel gravels.
