DARCLIFE - Work package 4: Growth conditions and lipid biosynthesis in Archaea, enrichment of benthic archaea

Abstract

Work packe 4 “Growth conditions and lipid biosynthesis in Archaea, enrichment of benthic archaea” is growing a number of environmentally relevant cren- and euryarchaeota under a set of controlled conditions in order to constrain the link between habitat and lipid distributions.

We are aiming to cultivate environmentally relevant Archaea under a range of controlled conditions to determine the impact of varying nutrient concentrations and composition, gassing rates, temperature, starvation, growth stage, etc., on the structural distribution, concentration, and isotopic composition of archaeal lipids. This knowledge will be highly beneficial to the interpretation of our observations in marine environments and contribute substantially to the development of new lipid-based proxies for biogeosciences and paleoenvironmental sciences. Also, attempts will be made to enrich for benthic archaea.

This work package is conducted in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Michael Thomm who is the head of the Archaeenzentrum at the University of Regensburg.

DARCLIFE is organized in five work packages:
