RV MARIA S. MERIAN MSM 15/3

MSM 15/3: June 5 - July 4, 2010

Piräus (Greece) - Valletta (Malta)

Major aim of the expedition MSM15/3 is to drill with the Bremer MeBo drilling rig at several locations two distinct slide bodies to record and to recover sediment cores (70 m, including the failure plane, see Figure below) In working area I two horizontal positioned slide masses could be identified from reflection seismic data. Here, a systematic MeBo transect from the undisturbed slope apron, the headwall, and along the landslide body all the way to the run out zone of the event is planned. In addition both slide events should be drilled. In working area II a similar transect from the undisturbed slope to the tail of slide masses is scheduled. In working area III, CAT flow meters from the Scripps Institution of Oceanograph will be deployed during the transit to Malta (see Figure below).
