In the frame of the second leg of MARIA S. MERIAN's 15th cruise investigations on gas leaks in the Sorokin Trough, at the southern margin of Kertsch Strait (Ukraine), and in the southeastern Black Sea at the continental margin of Georgia will be effected. Besides the quantification of gas leaks by means of ROV QUEST and other methods supported by the ship's side, the seep regions showing appearance of gas hydrates near the seabed will be microbathymetrically mapped by the AUV SEAL 5000. The mapping and detailed investigations are the pre-site surveys for the future drilling expedition with the Bremen MeBo, investigating the spreading in depth of the gas hydrates. As the RV MARIA S. MERIAN for the first time will be operated in the Black Sea with its 15th cruise, the vessel shall be presented to the Ukrainian public during its stay in the port of Sevastopol on May 20th and 21st 2010.
