Title: Modelling flow separation over bedforms
Author: Alice Lefebvre

One sentence (20 words max): the movement of water over large subaqueous dunes is studied, with particular interest in the reverse flow over the dune lee side (20 words)

Abstract (200 words max):
The coastal zone is a dynamic environment where strong interactions exist between hydrodynamics that cause sediment transport, resulting in a particular morphology, which in turn affects the hydrodynamics. A correct description of these phenomena and their interaction is essential to accurately predict the response of the coastal environment to equilibrium and changing conditions. In tidal inlets and rivers, the strong tidal currents and high availability of sandy sediment creates wavy features (e.g. ripples and dunes) that are called bedforms. Large bedforms often present a complex morphology with a certain degree of asymmetry (having a steep and gentle side). These bedforms have a strong influence on the flow, in particular within the flow separation zone situated over the bedform steep side where a large eddy forms. This flow separation zone is of great interest in coastal dynamics because of the strong effects the reverse current have on hydro- and sediment dynamics. This study aims at modelling the flow separation zone over bedforms using the Delft3D numerical model. The model is validated with laboratory measurements and then used for a systematic study of the flow separation zone over varying bedform shapes. (190 words)

Words for glossary:
(35 words max each)

Hydrodynamics: physics that deals with the movement of water. In the context of coastal oceanography, it usually refers to tidal currents and waves. (22 words)

Eddy: swirling of a fluid; it usually comprises a reverse current (flowing upstream compared to the main current) which is compensated by a downstream current. (24 words)

Flow separation zone: zone situated between the point of flow separation (where a reverse flow starts) and the reattachment point (where there is no more reverse flow) in which an eddy develops (29 words)
