Biomineralisation processes in biogenic carbonates and their impact on environmental proxies

Biogenic carbonates are often used for reconstructions of past environmental conditions. However, their use can be limited because of the presence of extinct species in the geological record, and of vital effects that often lead to the need of species specific calibrations. These vital effects are due to the biomineralisation processes. Here I will present some stable isotopic and elemental ratio measurements at the micrometer scale of some biogenic carbonates. These measurements allowed to decipher the processes at the calcification sites. This, in turn, could help for a better use of environmental proxies.
