Field Characteristics

Cyst of Protoperidinium thulensense (Balech) Matsuoka 2006

Characteristics:
Spherical brown cysts with a smooth cell wall without ornamentation. sometimes one or two flagellar scars can be observed on the opposite side from the archeopyle. The archeopyle is large, slit-like therophylic with a smooth or slightly zig-zag suture. It is located near the equator and encirceles approximately two-thirds to three-fourths of the circumference of the cell.

Motile affinity: Protoperidinium thulensense (Balech) Balech.
Cyst-theca relationship: Matsuoka 2006
Dimensions: 33 to 50 µm.

Comparison with other species:
This species most closely resembles cysts of Oblea rotunda and Dubridinium caperatum in having a smooth cell wall and a „pack-man“ like archeopyle. It differs from cysts of Oblea rotunda in having sometimes one or two flagellar scars. It differs from cysts of Dubridinium caperatum in lacking of tabulation other than the scars.
