Field characteristics

Cyst of Polykrikos hartmannii (Matsuoka and Fukuyo, 1986) Radi et al., 2013.

Characteristics:
Light brown, sometimes almost transparant cysts with numerous hollow acuminate processes. Processes have a round basis and can have different width, although they generally have the same length. It is characteristic that processes have few striae at the basis. Cyst wall can be granular to smooth. Archeopyle is a single split.

Dimensions: Cyst body 50 - 60 μm: length of processes: 7 - 12 μm
Motile affinity: cyst of Polykrikos hartmannii Zimmermann 1930
Stratigraphic range: recent

Comparison with other species:
Cysts of P. hartmannii closely resemble those of Echinidinium granulatum but differ from them in having processes of different thickness on the same specimen rather than uniform processes and by a bit large size. No spinulae have been observed on the process tips of cysts of P. hartmannii. Furthermore, the basis of the processes of P. hartmannii have a few striae whereas the basis of processes of E. granulatum are smooth.
