PhD Project
Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide from brown algae with long-term stability. It has been shown that it is secreted in large quantities into the ocean, but is not degraded completely by microorganism. It may instead persist in the water column and form particles, which reach the deep ocean via the biological carbon pump.
The aim of this PhD is to understand the fate of fucoidan in the ocean and its potentail as a carbon sink.
