The North Atlantic is the destination of an expedition with the research vessel SONNE, which starts this week from Bremerhaven. The focus is on habitats and their inhabitants in the deep sea between the coasts of Norway and Iceland. In order to include the expertise of researchers on land, dives will be transmitted live via telepresence.

The infrastructure necessary for the integration of land-based scientists is the result of a cooperation between MARUM in Bremen and GEOMAR in Kiel, funded by the ministry for research (BMBF). The transmissions for this expedition are distributed and made available to researchers and the general public via the hardware and software infrastructure set up at MARUM.

The dives can be followed live online.

The cruise is led by Saskia Brix from Senckenberg am Meer (Wilhelmshaven). On board is the remotely operated vehicle ROV Kiel 6000 from GEOMAR.

More information about the goals of the expedition MerMet17-6 can be found here.
