Celia Neto Dos Santos

I am a PhD student at the University of Bremen (Germany) with funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). My PhD project is being collaboratively developed in IPMA (Lisbon, Portugal), MARUM (Bremen) and as a guest PhD student at AWI (Bremerhaven, Germany), in the scope of Ocean and Climate sciences.

My research focuses on the study of diatoms and their specific organic compounds (biomarkers) applied to paleoclimatology and paleoceanography. Specifically, I am investigating if these diatom related organic compounds preserved in the ocean sediments could be used to reconstruct past marine productivity conditions, which are linked with past Ocean and Climate dynamics.

Regarding science communication and public outreach, I am interested in engaging society for Human Rights and Environmental Protection, especially focusing on Climate Change and its challenges/consequences.

I believe scientific literacy is an important step for a better understanding of our society and ecosystems (and the way how they are related), and an important driver for social change as it can make people reflect and change their habits towards a more sustainable way.
