The research vessel SONNE is currently about 16,000 kilometres away from its home port. In the South Pacific, a team of scientists investigated geological and geochemical processes and biological activities on the Tonga archipelago. Researchers from the MARUM - Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen also played a leading role in the expedition. This trip was the first successful test of how a newly installed C-band system can be used to integrate colleagues on land.

The aim is not only to integrate scientists ashore on ship expeditions via images and sound, but also to transfer larger data sets. A prerequisite for telepresence is the installation of the C-band system and an increase in the broadband transmission rate. The project "Telepresence in German Marine Research" is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

A second test phase is planned for December 2018.
