The University of Bremen is one of the founding members of the International Universities Climate Alliance. The network was established by 35 worldwide leading universities in the field of climate research. Research findings are to be communicated in a more effective manner via the network and will thus be more visible so that the challenges posed by climate change can be dealt with.

Climate research, together with marine and polar research, is one of the university's high profile areas. At MARUM, the role of the oceans, the polar regions and the atmosphere in global climate change are being studied.

The University of Bremen is the only German member.
