To retrieve samples in the form of sediment cores, the two worldwide unique seafloor drilling rigs MARUM-MeBo70 and MARUM-MeBo200 are used on expeditions. In the context of its 50th anniversary, the University of Bremen presents 50 places in Bremen that represent the university. Under the motto “50 Reasons WHY (German: WARUM? DARUM.) a wide variety of contributors present where ideas and cooperation from within the university have brought about something new. Bit by bit, the individual locations are being unveiled – now also including the MARUM.

Dr. Tim Freudenthal, Head of Team Marine Technology Seafloor Drilling Equipment, answers the question "WHY do MARUM researchers drill into the seafloor?" for MARUM.
