Field characteristics

Selenopemphix undulata Verleye et al., 2011

Field characteristics:
A large polar compressed pale brown to brown colour cyst with a reniform, subcircular to circular outline. The epicyst and hypocyst are almost equally sized. Hypocyst has two weakly developed rounded horns. Cingulum is wide and well developed, formed by two parallel ridges with very characteristic undulating margins. Archeopyle has an offset to the left of the dorsal midline and formed by loss of plate 2a. The shagreenate cyst wall can be occasionally faintly striated.

Dimensions: cyst body diameter: 38-89 mm.
Motile affinity: unknown
Stratigraphic range: Late Quaternary-Recent

Comparison with other species:
This species differs from S. antarctica by smaller size, darker and thicker wall, as well as undulated cingular margins. Selenopemphix nephroides is distinguishable from S. undulata by the smooth cyst wall and the absence of undulated margins.
