Field characteristics

Cysts of Archaeperidinium minutum Yamaguchi et al., 2011

Characteristics:
Spherical brown cysts covered with numerous hollow processes. Processes are capitate, tapering, hollow and distally closed. Processes are never fused or branched, and have circular bases. Processes generally erect but sometimes slightly curved. Archeopyle therophylic.

Dimensions: Cyst body 25 - 34 μm: length of processes: 4 - 9 μm
Motile affinity: cyst of Archaeperidinium minutum
Stratigraphic range: recent

Comparison with other species:
A. minutum most closely resembles cysts of Archaeperidinium saanichi and Protoperidinium tricingulatum. A. minutum can be distinguished by its smaller size than A. saanichi. It‘s processes have slightly smaller bases and there are slightly more processes per area . The major difference with P. tricingularis is that A. minutum has rather hollow than apiculocavate processes and it has a small therophylic archeopyle rather than a long split along the 2th, 3th and 4th apical plates as is the case with P. tricingulatum.
